Today's lesson: Research doesn't begin with Google.

If your teenager has ever said...

"I don't know where to start."

Research projects can feel enormous.

 

Find information.
Take notes.

For many dyslexic and neurodivergent teenagers, that's simply too many decisions all at once.

 

An overwhelmed nervous system doesn't need more pressure.

It needs a nervous system safe place to begin.

Most teenagers are taught to start by searching for information.

 

I teach them to do something different.

 

Before they search for a single website, ask them this:

"If you could interview the world's leading expert on your topic, what three questions would you ask?"

 

Don't search.

Don't write notes.

Don't worry about getting the questions perfect.

 

Just become curious.

For example...

 

Instead of researching:

The Titanic

 

They might ask:

→ Why did people believe it couldn't sink?
→ Could the disaster have been prevented?
→ What changed because of the Titanic?

 

Or if they're researching:

 

Climate Change

 

They might ask:

🌎 What's changing the fastest?
🌎 Why do experts disagree on some things?
🌎 What can ordinary people actually do?

 

Notice what happened.

 

Instead of collecting random facts...

Your teenager now has a purpose.

 

They're no longer looking for information.

They're looking for answers.

A Note For Parents

If your teenager couldn't think of three questions straight away, that's okay.

 

That's not a sign they're "bad at research."

It's often a sign that the task feels too big for their nervous system.

We don't build confident researchers by adding more pressure.

We build them by making the first step feel safe.
Why does this make such a difference?

When teenagers begin with Google...

They often become overwhelmed by thousands of websites.

Their brain is forced to make decision after decision.

Which website?

Which facts?

Which notes?

What's important?

 

That's not a lack of ability.

It's cognitive overload.

 

A nervous system safe learner needs fewer decisions, not more.

 

Questions do exactly that.
They give the brain one clear direction.

This is exactly how I teach research.

Hi there! I’m Francesca.

As a high school English teacher — and a parent — I’ve spent years watching capable, intelligent teens struggle with one very specific academic challenge:

turning research into writing.

Many students can explain ideas clearly when they talk.
